Bihar Elections 2025: Easier Voter Identification on the Horizon?
The Supreme Court has taken a step towards potentially simplifying voter identification in Bihar for the upcoming 2025 Assembly elections. On July 10th, the Court urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to consider accepting Aadhaar cards and ration cards, in addition to the existing Elector’s Photo Identity Card (EPIC), as valid proof of identity for voters during the special electoral roll revision.
Supreme Court Encourages Inclusive Voter Identification
This move by the Supreme Court aims to facilitate easier participation in the electoral process. By expanding the accepted forms of identification, the Court hopes to make it more convenient for eligible voters to register and exercise their right to vote.
ECI Response Awaited, Revision Continues
While the Supreme Court has sought a response from the ECI regarding their suggestion, the ongoing special electoral roll revision process in Bihar will continue. The Court’s decision not to halt the revision process ensures that preparations for the 2025 elections remain on track. This will be a significant development to follow as the ECI prepares its response and the implications for voter accessibility become clearer.
