Bangladesh Rethinks Formal Address for Women Officials
Bangladesh is taking steps to modernize how it addresses women in official positions. The interim government is moving away from the practice of using “Sir” for women officials and is forming a dedicated committee to explore more suitable forms of address.
Review Committee to Explore Alternatives
The committee, headed by Syeda Rizwana Hasan, current advisor on energy, will be tasked with finding a respectful and appropriate way to address senior officials and public servants going forward. This move signifies a shift towards more inclusive and gender-sensitive language within the government.
Focus on Respect and Inclusivity
The review aims to identify alternatives that reflect the respect due to these positions while also acknowledging the need for more inclusive language. The committee’s recommendations are expected to bring a positive change in official communication within Bangladesh.
