Tibet Issue Casts Shadow Over Jaishankar’s China Visit

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s upcoming trip to Beijing marks his first visit to China in five years. However, the long-awaited meeting is overshadowed by ongoing tensions, with Tibet emerging as a significant point of contention.

Chinese Embassy Calls Tibet Issue a “Thorn”

Yu Jing, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India, recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to describe Tibet, referred to as Xizang by China, as a “burden” for India and a “thorn” in the relationship between the two countries. This statement underscores the sensitivity and complexity surrounding the issue.

Jaishankar to Meet with Chinese Counterpart

Despite the existing friction, Jaishankar’s visit to Singapore and China from July 13th to 15th is expected to include a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in Beijing. The discussions will likely address a range of bilateral issues, including the sensitive topic of Tibet.
