Earthquake Safety Tips: 4.4 Magnitude Tremor Shakes Delhi-NCR
Delhi-NCR residents woke up to a startling experience early Thursday morning as a 4.4 magnitude earthquake shook the region. While no major damage has been reported, the tremor served as a reminder of the importance of earthquake preparedness. Following the event, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) issued safety guidelines to help people stay safe during and after an earthquake.
Staying Safe During an Earthquake
If an earthquake strikes, your immediate actions can make a big difference. The NDRF advises the following:
If You’re Indoors:
Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops. If there isn’t a table or desk nearby, protect your head and neck by covering them with your arms and seeking shelter against an interior wall.
If You’re Outdoors:
Move to an Open Area: Stay away from buildings, trees, power lines, and anything that could fall. Once in the open, drop to the ground and cover your head and neck until the shaking stops.
After the Earthquake:
Aftershocks can occur, so it’s important to remain cautious. Check for injuries and provide assistance if needed. Be aware of potential hazards like damaged buildings, gas leaks, and downed power lines. Listen to local authorities and follow their instructions.
